Robert received his PhD in Economics from the University of Washington and is currently Professor of Economics and of Environmental Science and Management at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is also a University Fellow at Resources for the Future and has held visiting positions at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, the University of Washington, Resources for the Future, Tilburg University in the Netherlands, Osaka University in Japan and elsewhere. Robert’s primary research specialties are natural resource economics and political economy. His political economy research has examined how governance institutions affect the provision of public goods and the management of natural resources. In recent years his natural resource research has focused on rights-based strategies for managing fisheries. His research has been published in leading professional journals for economics generally, and in prominent professional journals specializing in natural resource and environmental economics. Robert is past Managing Editor of the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management and has served on editorial boards for several other professional journals. He has also served as a consultant for the World Bank, U.S. Agency for International Development, U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, California State Lands Commission, and several private firms and nongovernmental organizations. Bob earned his BA and PhD in Economics from Washington State University.
