Mision Tiburon: Scalloped Hammerhead Shark Conservation
The Scalloped hammerhead shark, Sphyrna lewini, is classified as endangered by IUCN Red List. The aim of the project is to improve the conservation of the S. lewini population in the Eastern Tropical Pacific by means of protecting Golfo Dulce, a nursery area located in the southern area of Costa Rica, in the province of Puntarenas, and has an area of 700km2. In a joined effort with local stakeholders and Government, Mision Tiburon created a strategy for the protection of scalloped hammerhead sharks in Golfo Dulce. This strategy, includes specific fishing management actions and training programs to set up alternatives and to implement better fishing practices for local fishermen, will help to conserve the Eastern Tropical Pacific's population of scalloped hammerhead shark, Sphyrna lewini, by means of protecting the nursery area in Golfo Dulce.
